As the name suggests, the book is made as a reference work full of facts and well-founded conclusions about the Vikings' fashion and choice of dress. This gives the reader a unique insight into what the Vikings actually wore and which accessories and adornments completed their garments. The book opens with a chronological and geographical review of the archaeological finds and depictions that form the basis of today's knowledge of Viking clothing.
The author then continues with a review of the textiles, hides and other materials the Vikings used, as well as a section on the tools and techniques used to adorn the garments. Among other things, plant dyeing, nålbinding, embroidery and tablet weaving each have their own sections. Everything is clearly explained and illustrated with photographs and sketches that give the information good depth.
The third part of the book goes through the Vikings' garments, divided by the regions of Denmark, Sweden and Norway and presented chronologically. The garments are also divided into men's and women's dress. Here the author systematically works through the finds that exist and explains along the way about techniques, design and how fashion changed over time. The reader is treated to an enormous wealth of detail as well as fantastic fashion sketches that vividly present how the garments may have looked. There is something here both for the very nerdy and for those seeking inspiration for their Viking wedding.
Without a doubt a book that we at Nordlys recommend every Viking enthusiast keep on their bookshelf.
